Download Your Own YouTube Videos: Official Tools vs the Desktop Future

This URL used to be a “2026 edition” list of TubeMate, Y2Mate, and SnapTube — plus a reminder to respect copyright after we had just taught you how to ignore it. We pulled those product write-ups. We did not test those apps, some of that category has a messy installer reputation, and ranking them is how Google decides a page is interchangeable sludge.

The useful guide is narrower: how a content owner gets their own YouTube files out, what Google is doing to everyone else, and why desktop is the only architecture that still matches both the law and the network.

YouTube’s official downloader (the one that is actually documented)

YouTube’s help article says you can download your uploads as MP4. You cannot download other users’ videos through that feature. Premium offline viewing is separate and stays inside the official apps.

One video or Short — YouTube Studio

1. Go to YouTube Studio and sign in as the channel that uploaded the file.
2. Open Content. Use Videos, Shorts, or Live as needed.
3. Open the ⋯ menu on the row → Download.

Known limits, from that same help page:

• Output is 720p or 360p, “depending on the video size” — not a promise of your original 4K.
• Five downloads per video per 24 hours.
• Missing or blocked if the video was removed, has certain copyright or Community Guidelines strikes, or uses a preapproved audio track.

If you trimmed or blurred in Studio, YouTube notes you can download and re-upload to publish those edits. That is a Studio workflow, not a third-party site.

The whole library — Google Takeout

Google Takeout can include YouTube (and YouTube Music) data. Videos typically come back in the original format or as H.264/AAC MP4. If uploads are missing, check whether they live on a Brand Account and run Takeout while that account is selected.

Takeout is the closest official “get my masters back” button. It is also an archive job: request, wait, download a zip. It is not a Shorts downloader you use between edits.

Why people still search for a YouTube downloader

Because the official owner path is real and insufficient for a lot of professional work.

If you want to cut Shorts from an hour-long original, dub a keynote, or repackage a catalog, 360p/720p re-encodes and a five-a-day cap get in the way. Losing the local drive that held the master is common. YouTube became the only copy.

That is a reasonable engineering problem for the person who uploaded the file. It is not a license to run a public website that fetches the entire platform.

Google’s response has been to make hosted fetching miserable: player-client changes, attestation, and — the part that matters for “free online Shorts downloader” — blocking or challenging datacenter IP ranges. People who run the same downloader on a laptop versus Cloud Run or a VPS keep seeing “works locally, 403 in the cloud.” A website is the cloud.

So the market filled with tabs that work intermittently, then wrap the file in ads. We are not going to keep blessing that layer.

Desktop is not a loophole. It is a different machine.

A desktop YouTube downloader (including serious open-source CLIs people run themselves) lives on your network. YouTube sees an ISP address, not AWS. When YouTube wants a real client, a local browser session is actually there.

That is why the industry consensus among people who still need this for their own pipelines is drifting off the web and onto software you install. Online downloaders will remain for casual attempts. They will not be dependable infrastructure.

We will say this plainly: if you do not own the content, do not download it. Desktop does not change that. If you do own it, you should not have to launder your own keynote through a site that will be a different domain next month.
